Learning in workplace training courses is not always that helpful for everyday use. They are often inflexible around our goals and everyday work too. As it turns out, many of us actually feel that most of our learning and developing in the workplace comes from our experiences rather than structured courses.
Charles Jennings’ 70:20:10 explains how workplace knowledge is consumed. Only 10% of what we learn comes through structured courses and programs. The majority comes from our experiences. Companies tend to spend most of their learning budget on structured training, the least effective form of learning.
Jenning’s himself states that, «The 70:20:10 framework is a simple concept that has developed from work carried out by various researchers over the past half-century that suggests a one-dimensional focus on structured training and development – a rut that many organisations had fallen into – misses the opportunity to exploit learning and development where most of it happens, which is within the workflow.»
